Barnton Bunker has successfully installed state-of-the-art solar panels to help with sustainability.
After three months of dedicated effort, Barnton Bunker has successfully integrated state-of-the-art solar panels!
The decision to incorporate solar panels has been a longstanding aspiration for us. The significance lies not only in establishing a cost-effective power source but also in our commitment to environmental sustainability. This major enhancement grants certain sections of the site newfound autonomy, enabling self-sufficiency. While the site's complete renovation is an ongoing project, the installation of solar panels marks a substantial leap forward.
The installation process, although challenging, was a collaborative endeavour spanning several months and involving the dedicated contributions of numerous volunteers. Precision was key in placing the panels atop the containers to harness maximum sunlight. Our on-site team skilfully crafted brackets, bending steel bars into U shapes at specified heights. Overcoming challenges such as preventing rainwater stagnation and achieving the optimal panel inclination demanded ingenuity. In the end, we successfully installed 27 solar panels for the bunker, 9 on each container, a testament to the power of teamwork!
This achievement represents one of our targeted milestones for the foreseeable future, and we take immense pride and joy in its realisation. Looking ahead, we are eager to finalise the repainting of the metal structure in one of the main rooms and complete the gravel path at the rear of the site.
