Discover Life as a Barnton Bunker Volunteer: Insights from our current volunteers.

Time-lapse by our volunteer Bill.

It’s a community life.

Living as a volunteer at Barnton Bunker is very different from what you can experience outside. Living here is being part of a community, of a big family where we can freely choose what we want to work on. We don’t live inside the bunker but on the same site in a big shared-house and caravans. Daily life is marked by sharing, kindness, acceptance and good vibes. Some of us like to go out together, organise parties or viewing sessions but participation is never an obligation. Our health and time to ourselves remain important and we are always free of our movements.

It’s a personal work organisation.

As said before, we can choose what we want to work on, may it be to help each other on a big project or find a one-person job, sometimes we change our minds and change the task to get to another one and it is perfectly fine. There is a great freedom in the management of our work, since there is no predefined schedule, we work at our own pace on multiple and diversified tasks that touch on a large number of areas. In a bunker, there isn’t just paint and carpentry needed, but also making roads for better access, moving rocks, even electricity and many more. One of the best things as a volunteer is the opportunity to develop a large number of new skills.

It’s a personal growth opportunity.

Volunteering for this project is knowing that we participate in the preservation of a historical heritage. It is also an opportunity to meet passionate people, make lifelong friendships and learn more about ourselves. By volunteering, you will gain practical skills and a valuable experience. Above all, it’s an opportunity to gain confidence in yourself and your abilities by seeing the fruit of your efforts in the field. Through learning various abilities and sharing precious moments, we also discover ourselves and isn’t that the best part?
