Volunteer Spotlight: Erin from Shropshire, UK

Meet Erin, one of the newest and most enthusiastic members of the Barnton Bunker volunteer crew. At just 20 years old, she’s already made a big impression since joining us in March via Workaway - and she’s planning to stick around for the long haul. Her boyfriend, Dave, also volunteers on site, and the two of them have quickly become part of the Bunker family.

So, why the Bunker? For Erin, it was a mix of things: the cool site, the friendly people, and the chance to do something meaningful. “It just seemed like a great place to be,” she says. “Everyone’s really welcoming, and it’s work that actually feels like it matters.” She had never volunteered before, but that hasn’t held her back one bit.

Coming in, Erin knew the place was a Bunker, but admits she wasn’t sure what to expect. “It was really cool seeing it for the first time,” she says. That sense of excitement and discovery hasn’t worn off either - every day is different, and every project comes with a new skill to learn.

Hands-on work is right up Erin’s alley. She describes herself as the type who gets stuck in and keeps going until the job’s done, which makes her a perfect fit for life at the Bunker. From wielding a pickaxe to driving the digger and quad bike, she’s not afraid to try something new.

Erin also brings with her some handy experience in animal care, lumberjacking, and welding - all things she’s excited to build on while she’s here. But it’s not just the physical side of the work that’s been rewarding.

“I used to be very shy,” Erin says. “Since coming here, I’ve gained a lot of confidence.” One of her favourite things now is welcoming new arrivals and making them feel at home - something she wouldn’t have done before. “It doesn’t feel like work,” she explains. “It just feels like we’re all hanging out. When everyone’s here, it’s just good fun.”

As a woman working in a hands-on, often male-dominated environment, Erin says the Bunker has been a breath of fresh air. “Everything feels equal. You’re never expected to do something because of who you are. No matter your background or what you enjoy, there’s always something for you to get stuck into.”

We’re so glad to have Erin as part of the team. Her energy, determination, and growing confidence make her a standout volunteer - and we can’t wait to see what she tackles next.
